The Pork Pie Hat

Sunday March 7

hm, 2 cups of coffee?

Sun is shining!

Did you know that Charles Mingus composed a song called Good Bye Pork Pie Hat as a tribute to Lester Young following Lester’s death in 1959.  It is one of Mr. Mingus’ most well-known songs, and it is quite beautiful.

The pork-pie started off as a ladies’ hat in the late 1800s.  However, the pork-pie hat has often been associated with jazz musicians, especially in the 1940s and 1950s.  It is a hat with a flat top, that has a circular shape in the crown, literally resembling a pork- pie.  It has a short crown, and typically a short brim as well.  This hat is most popular in felt, but we made a few straw ones and folks like them too.  Pork pies can also be referred to as open or closed telescopes.

Cheers,

Paul
