A Letter to You About Our Big Plans: Surprise!

To Our Friends, Family, Customers, & Supporters!

We want to write to thank you profoundly for your continued support as we grow this beautiful and antiquated business of making and selling hats.

Since 2009 we have worked very hard and accomplished a lot. We have expanded the variety of products and price points we can offer our customers. We have continued to update our workshop and retail store front. We have vended, and attended many new events in the Bay Area to spread the word, and we have worked with consignment and wholesale in order to offer our hats at other stores around the Bay Area. Furthermore we have sourced new materials for making our products, and we have been down to Ecuador multiple times to cultivate our relationships with the master weavers down there.
Business is slowly and steadily increasing since our ownership in 2009, and we have done a lot to accommodate this. We now proudly have in our employment two hardworking lady employees; who greatly add to our team and help us accomplish the daunting task of making high quality hats for our very high quality customers. We do a lot less “DIY” (do it yourself) and instead employ local artisans and workers to help us do things like build work tables, screen print our boxes and t-shirts, and more; all of this so we can focus on the most important things: honing our skills as hat makers, and expanding the business.
Our dream as a team here at Paul’s Hat Works is to be successful and profitable enough so that the four of us, and our current and future employees, can make a healthy enough income to support ourselves and our families. In order to do this, we have to keep growing, taking risks, and expanding.
It’s because of this wish and need to grow the business that we did an “Indiegogo” campaign in 2012 to raise funds to help us open a second store in New York. The campaign helped us to raise about half the funds that we were needing for this particular venture. After a year of research, planning, and exploring new things, we have decided that the smoothest road to opening a store in New York is to is to go in a different direction.
We are excited and so happy to announce that we will be opening a store in Kentucky on December 1st of this year!
We have been doing pop up shops in Louisville, Kentucky, for the past two years during the week leading up to the Kentucky Derby; the foremost hat event in the United States. Selling our beautiful straw hats in Louisville has been so successful, and so well received by the folks over there, that we want to explore this option much further.
We have decided that we can more wisely spend the money raised by the campaign by first opening a brick and mortar store in Louisville for a one year trial period. Firstly, starting in Kentucky is not only more cost effective and thus more realistic with the amount of funds we have to work with, but also there is opportunity to capitalize on this amazing hat event of the Kentucky Derby in order to start saving money for our future New York store.
This will be the first “second” Paul’s Hat Works since its founding in 1918. We will take custom orders at this new store, sell straw and felt hats, do hat cleanings, and hat finishing at this new store. One of the owners will always have a presence at this store.
We are very excited, a little nervous, but mostly grateful, to all of you who have made this possible for us. We believe in our little hat shop, and we want to help it on its way to greatness.
Most sincerely and with utmost gratitude,
Olivia, Abbie, Wendy, Kirsten (& rest of the team at Paul’s Hat Works!)

P.S. If you have any queries about our plans to open a second store in Kentucky please feel free to contact us!
